Abstract

In international era, Indonesia needs the high competent young generation to improve globally. However, Indonesia has very low level of reading comprehension, as the main part of literacy. Senior high school students should increase their reading skill because most English test in Indonesia is a reading test. In addition, senior high school students’ character is excited in a competition. However, their enthusiasm has to be improved in reading. Therefore, Quiz alliance strategy is used to increase the reading skill of senior high school students. This study is aimed to describe how the Quiz alliance could increase students’ reading skill and how they respond the use of Quiz alliance in reading. The design of this study is a classroom action research, using qualitative and quantitative data. So, observation field notes, questionnaires, documentations and reading tests are the instruments in collecting the data. The researcher used data presenting, data reducing and concluding to analyze the data. The criteria of success were 85% of the students in the classroom get the excellence score, the range of 90-100. The result showed that Quiz alliance teaching strategy could increase the students reading skill. On the first cycle, the students’ average score was 91.81 and 74% of students got the excellent score. Meanwhile, on the second cycle, the average score was 94.54 and 88% of students got the excellent score. The students were active, independent or self confident and enthusiast to respond the use of Quiz alliance in reading. The students’ reading comprehension was increased well. It was caused by the series of Quiz alliance activities provided in teaching and learning process. Moreover, it encouraged the students’ increasing enthusiastic and vocabularies in reading comprehension.
