Abstract
Google Translate as a tool to translate from source language to target language. Google Translate helpful students to make easily their work, especially in writing skill of essay to make it clear their writing. However, many people have a different perception of using Google Translate such as knowledge, attitude, and behavior. This research deals with perception toward the use of Google Translate in essay writing of the English Department Students of IAIN Kediri. The aim of this research is to investigate students’ perceptions on the use feature of Google Translate in essay writing. The design of this study is quantitative approach and using a survey as the design of this study. The researcher using a questionnaire as the instrument to collect the data. The questionnaire consist 30 statements favorable and unfavorable statement. The result was categorized in negative (X̅̅ = 1.2-2), neutral (X̅̅ = 2.1-3), and positive (X̅̅ = 3.1-4). The total population in this research is 251 students from English Department Student in academic 2019/2020, and 100 students chosen as the sample and took by randomly. Perception divided into 3 categories, they were knowledge (grammar, vocabulary, semantic), attitude, and behavior. The highest score of knowledge in vocabulary got X̅̅ = 3.51 from number 5 with statement Google Translate makes it easy for me to learn grammar anywhere and anytime. Attitude with X̅̅ = 3.55 became the highest score from number 22 with statement Using of Google Translate help me easier to do translation assignments. Meanwhile, behavior got X̅̅ = 3.48 from number 29 became the highest score with the statement I always check the results of Google Translate that I use. The result of all the highest scores showed students ‘strongly agree’ and was ‘positive’ categories explained that Google Translate easy to use and help the students to do their assignments in translation, but not all students believe the result of Google Translate, so students always check the result from Google Translate.
