Abstract

TikTok has gained popularity as a content sharing platform, particularly among students. Exploring its potential as a tool for language learning is crucial. It is often argued that social media's presence can be detrimental and negatively impact students' cognitive development. However, it is important to recognize the positive aspects of social media, specially TikTok that often go unnoticed. Therefore, this research is conducted to provide valuable information about the influence of TikTok. It aims to find out what students perceive impacts of TikTok English content on their English performances. The study adopts a qualitative research design, employing surveys to gather data from students who actively engage with TikTok English content. The questionnaire was distributed to 97 students of English department, 58 English course, and 52 senior high school students from various schools. The participants are selected from various educational backgrounds and language proficiency levels to ensure diverse perspectives. Qualitative and quantitative analysis are employed to analyze the collected data. The result of this study indicates that TikTok English content sharing has both positive and negative perceived impacts on their English skills. On the positive side, participants report enhanced speaking skills through exposure to diverse accents, improved vocabulary skills, and increased confidence in speaking skill. Additionally, participants find TikTok content is engaging and entertaining, which helps them develop an interest in English learning. However, some participants also express concerns regarding the security and privacy of TikTok. Furthermore, the potential distraction and addictive of the platform are acknowledged as challenges to maintain a focused and balanced learning experience.
