Abstract
ABSTRACT Rahmawati, Ulfa. 2021. “A Semiotic Analysis on English Textbook Covers of Second Grade Junior High School Learners”. Thesis, Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisors: (I) Mohammad Muhyidin, M.Pd (II) Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd Keywords: Sign, Textbook Cover, Semiotic This research aimed for knowing what are the types of signs found on English textbook covers of Second Grade Junior High School Learners and also knowing the most dominant type of sign used. Semiotics is the study of signs, the analysis of signs and everything that relates to it, how it functions, how it relates to other signs, how it is supplied and interpreted by those that use it. Semiotic analysis of alternative structures, laws and norms provide meaning to these signals. Semiotics has several core concepts, namely Representamen, object and Interpretant. This research was conducted based on Charles Sanders Peirce theory. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained from 4 of English textbook covers of Second Grade Junior High School Learners. The authors used document studies to collect data. researchers analyzed the data based on the signs contained. In this study, the researcher as an instrument must validate the extent to which qualitative researchers are ready to engage in research that will enter the learning space. To check the data or in other words used to make the data valid. The author uses investigator triangulation. From this data, the authors found the type of signs on English textbook covers of Second Grade Junior High School Learners vary widely, based on Object there are 12 icon signs, 13 index sign and 13 symbol signs than based on Representamen there are 4 qualisign, 8 sinsign and 6 legisign than based on Interpretant there are 4 rheme, 4 dicisign and 4 argument found. It can be concluded that signs really need to be studied to understand the meaning implied of English textbook covers of Second Grade Junior High School Learners. this is due to beautify his work.
