Abstract
Writing is an activity of making a text that deals with how people use language to communicate in writing. Indonesian students have problem when writing because writing is not first language. Determining the origins of faults in their writing. The researcher decided to do research on the common errors students made through writing argumentative essays. It will be easier to use error analysis. The objectives of this study are to describe the types of error, to find out the most dominant types of error, and to identify the possible causes of error that are made by third semester students in essay writing. The design of the study is descriptive qualitative error analysis. The data of this study were thirty argumentative essays from a class of third semester in University of Kediri written by students. The data was obtained through the subject's lecturer through Google Drive. Then identifying error, classifying errors, calculating errors, and explaining errors. It is analyzed by using Keshavarz’s theory. There are nine types of errors are made by students, such as error of article, error of preposition, error of agreement, error of gerund, error of to infinitive, error of modal, error of passive and active voice, error of tenses, and error of word order. The researcher found out 266 errors that are made by third semester students in argumentative essay writing of IAIN Kediri. The errors were divided to be 71 errors (26.7%) of agreement, 57 errors (21.4%) of word order, 48 errors (18.1%) of article, 36 errors (13,5%) of preposition, 21 error (7.9%) of tenses, 13 errors (4.9%) of to infinitive, 11 errors (4.1%) of gerund, 6 errors (2.3%) of modal is, and 3 errors (1.1%) of passive and active voice and it was also found that the cause of grammatical errors in the argumentative essays written by the third semester students of the English Department in University of Kediri, and the possible causes of errors made by students are first language, and overgeneralization. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the most dominant errors made by students is agreement, and the least errors made by students is active and passive voice.
