Abstract

A problem in learning speaking is an exist thing which occurs on English students Department in every single institution especially in pandemic. Pandemic brings several impacts in learning speaking that brings several problems automatically. The common problems in learning speaking are shyness, nervousness, fear of mistake, anxiety. This research was conducted IAIN Kediri and the populations of this research were 35 students from the forth semester students of English Education Department in academic year 2022/2023. The purpose of this study was to find out students’ problem in learning speaking during pandemic and the strategies to overcome the problems. The study was design in descriptive qualitative. The data was collected by using questionnaire and interview. The result was analysed and processed well then it was presented by displaying data description in percentage, figure and table. The result showed various percentages and number of students which was categorized into three categories. The category students’ problem toward fear of communicating showed the highest response on students never feel quite sure of themselves when speaking foreign language was 21 students (60%). The strategy to solve the problem was creating friendly and open class environment in order to boost students’ confidence. The category students’ problem toward fear of negative evaluation showed the highest response on students feeling heart pounding when going to be called on in language class was 16 students (45,7%). The strategy to solve the problem is giving chance to the students to have speaking practice in group discussion. The category students’ problem toward negative performance assumption and social comparison showed the highest response on students’ perception about speaking skill of the other students are better than them. It was filled out with 22 participants (62,9%). The strategy to solve the problem is giving motivation to the students to boost their confidence.
