Abstract

This research is descriptive qualitative. Data were taken from questionnaires and interviews, which were then analyzed descriptively. Questionnaires were distributed to 65 students and English teachers, while interviews were conducted with 10 students and English teachers. Researchers collected student questionnaire data online via google form, while teacher questionnaires, student interviews, and teacher interviews were conducted directly in schools. The results of this study indicated that there are two categories of students' speaking challenges; psychological challenges, and linguistic challenges. The psychological challenges experienced by most students were students' anxiety and confidence when speaking English in front of the class, and the lowest challenge was the students‟ motivation. For linguistic challenges; lack of vocabulary mastery, fluency, understanding of grammar, and pronunciation.
