Abstract

Writing is a basic language skill, as important as speaking, listening and reading. Students need to know how to write letters, how to compile written reports, how to reply to advertisements and write using electronic media. Here, English teacher must be smart in choosing a media that will be applied in the class. The aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of the use of Instagram in teaching writing descriptive text for the tenth-grade students of SMAN 2 Kediri. The design of this research was quasi-experimental. The population of the research is all from tenth grade of students‟ senior high school in academic year 2020/2021. The samples were two classes that named experimental and control group. The experimental group was class X MIPA 4 that consists of 30 students, meanwhile the control group was class X MIPA 3 that consists of 30 students. The researcher used tests as the instrument of the research. The format of the test is writing test. In analyzing data, the researcher used Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) by SPSS Program 21.0 version. The result of this research showed that the data was normally distributed. It was proven by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test that the significant value (p) of tests were .200 for pre-test of the experimental group, .106 for pre-test of the control group, .200 for post-test of the experimental group, and .068 for post-test of the control group. The homogeneity variances test shows that (p) was .209 (p>α 0.05). The homogeneity regression (Slope) shows that (p) was .762 (p>α 0.05).
