Abstract

Listening is an important aspect of language that every person needs to understand and interpret some information through the processes of hearing, recognizing, and comprehending language sounds and meanings. However, many people argue that listening is difficult because spoken language differs from written language. Then, it is also recognized as the first communication skill naturally acquired by humans since early life. This research was conducted because they are the most difficult to master and an important part of everyday communication. Therefore, the objective of the study is to analyze a significant difference in English listening skills between students taught using audio-visual and those taught using only audio about the Mira Royal Detective film. This study employed a quantitative research method with a quasi- experimental design. The study population consisted of eighth-grade students at SMP Islam Brawijaya Trowulan, totaling 170 students. The research sample consisted of two classes: an experimental group of 30 students and a control group of 29 students. The instruments used for data collection were pre-tests and post-tests in multiple-choice format. Then, the results of this study were analyzed using an ANCOVA test with SPSS 27.0. This ANCOVA test was based on the classical assumptions of normality, homogeneity of variance, linearity, simple linear regression, and homogeneity of regression slopes. The results of the study indicate that all data are normally distributed, as shown by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Furthermore, the results of the homogeneity of variance test show that the data are homogeneous. Furthermore, the linearity test for the experimental class indicates that the linear test is significant. For simple linear regression, the results indicate that the simple linear regression is not significant. Meanwhile, the results of the homogeneity of regression slopes test show whether the assumption is met. So, the regression lines between groups are parallel. If this assumption is met, the analysis can proceed to the hypothesis test using the ANCOVA test. Finally, the hypothesis test using ANCOVA shows a result of (0.131 > 0.05). These results indicate that the null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected. So, it can be concluded that there is no significant difference in English listening skills between students taught using audio-visual and those taught using only audio about the Mira Royal Detective film in SMP Islam Brawijaya Trowulan.
