Abstract
This study investigated the correlation between vocabulary mastery and students’ descriptive writing ability among seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 Kota Kediri. Vocabulary mastery plays an important role in supporting students’ writing skills, particularly in producing clear and meaningful descriptive texts. This study employed a quantitative correlational design involving 96 students from classes VII-F, VII-G, and VII-H selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used were a vocabulary mastery test consisting of 20 multiple-choice items and a descriptive writing test. The data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, linearity test, and Spearman Rho correlation test through IBM SPSS Statistics. The findings revealed a strong and significant positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing ability (r = 0.700, p < 0.001). The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.533) indicated that vocabulary mastery contributed 53.3% to students’ writing ability. The mean score of vocabulary mastery was 69.95, while the mean score of writing ability was 77.43. It can be concluded that improving students’ vocabulary mastery can support the development of their descriptive writing ability. Keywords: vocabulary mastery, writing ability, descriptive text
