Abstract
One of the creative approaches in teaching English is a "Cooperative Learning". The cooperative learning has so many methods, one of the methods are Numbered head together. This study aims at improving the students' reading comprehension to understand monologue text in reading text at XI IPS 2 in MAN Purwoasri Kediri, because the reading comprehension was poor. The subject of this study is the students at MAN Purwoasri, especially class XI IPS 2 of 35 students. This research showed that the implementation of numbered head together can improve XI-IPS 2 class in reading comprehension, the material used in this research is monologue text. That is about how to make the students understand the monologue text in reading ability. The researcher and the English teacher conducted classroom action research (CAR) to face the problems. This research was applied through 2 cycle that is preceded by preliminary study, planning the action, implementing, reflecting, observing, and the researcher uses reading test to know the students reading comprehension. The researcher collected the data from the students' test and students' observation checklist. The data analysis was based on the three criteria of success. The first criterion of success is at least 80% of students actively in all activities which are observed and achieved the minimum score, and second criterion is the average score is at least 70, and the last criterion is if at least 80% of students got score at least 70. The result in cycle I showed that: 51.43% of students were active and 62.86% of students got the test score less than 70. It means that the result in cycle I was not successful. So, the researcher had to continue to cycle II. The result in cycle II showed that: 85.71% of students were active and 82.86% of students got the test score with average 80. It means that the result in cycle II increased successfully. Based on the researcher result above, it can be concluded that the implementation of numbered head together can be used improving students' reading comprehension at the second grade of MAN Purwoasri Kediri.
