Abstract
Speaking is an important skill in learning English, as it enables students to express their idea in verbal communication. In educational field such as tahfidz class, students are expected not only to excel in religious studies but also in academic subjects, including English. One of factors that influences students’ speaking ability is their motivation. This research aims to investigate the correlation between students speaking skill and their motivation at tenth-grade (tahfidz class) of SMAN 1 Prambon. This study used quantitative method with a correlational design. The participants of this research consisted of 34 students from tenth-grade (tahfidz class) of SMAN 1 Prambon. The data were collected through a speaking test and motivation questionnaire. To analyze the data, Pearson Product Moment was applied in this research. Based on the research findings, it was found that significant value showed 0,004 (P < 0,05). It means that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Then, the coefficient correlation between students’ speaking skill and their motivation is 0,486 (r = 0,486). It shows that the correlation is enough with positive (+) correlation. Thus, it can be concluded that there was positive correlation between students’ speaking skill and their motivation at tenth-grade (tahfidz class) of SMAN 1 Prambon, with enough correlation. This indicates that students with higher motivation tend to have better speaking performance, and vice versa.
