Abstract
This research discusses the educational moral values found in the True Spirit movie. The focus of this research is to identify and explain how values such as courage, honesty, generosity, and loyalty are portrayed through the real-life story of Jessica Watson. The urgency of this research lies in the importance of character education in today’s educational system. Students are expected not only to be academically smart but also to have strong moral character. From a pedagogical point of view, movies can be used as an effective alternative medium to teach moral values in a contextual and engaging way. By presenting inspiring stories and relatable characters, movies help students build character through emotional connection and personal reflection. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The data were taken from dialogues and scenes in the True Spirit movie that reflect educational moral values. The researcher applied James Rachels’ theory to classify the types of moral values found in the movie, which include courage, honesty, generosity, and loyalty. The data collection technique involved watching the movie several times, identifying relevant dialogues or scenes, and analyzing their moral meaning based on the context of the story. The results of this research show that there are 26 data points representing educational moral values in the True Spirit movie. Honesty is the most dominant value with 10 data (38.46%), followed by loyalty with 6 data (23.08%), and both courage and generosity with 5 data each (19.23%). These values are shown through the actions, decisions, and struggles of Jessica Watson during her solo sailing journey, along with the support of the people around her. This research concludes that the True Spirit movie has strong pedagogical potential and can be used as a learning medium to support character education in school settings.
