Abstract
Meylia, Shinta. 2024. Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability of Narrative Text at Mts Negeri 3 Nganjuk. Thesis. Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah State Islamic institute (IAIN) of Kediri, Advisors: (1) Nur Afifi M. App. Ling, Ph.D. (2) Annisa Aulia Saharani, M. Pd. Keywords: Students’ reading comprehension ability, narrative text. Reading is a very crucial activity for students in the learning process. Reading is the activity of taking information from writing, then understanding it and turning the information into new knowledge. In reading activities, there is one important element, which is reading comprehension. In reading activities, readers need understanding in order to be able to extract information from the text they read. In addition, several factors can also affect students' reading comprehension ability. This study aims to find out how the reading comprehension ability of MTs Negeri 3 Nganjuk students and also what factors can affects students’ reading comprehension ability. The qualitative research method was applied in this research with 25 students of IX-K MTs Negeri 3 Nganjuk as the subjects of this research. Moreover, the students as the subject of the research took the reading comprehension test and also interview with researcher to collect the necessary research data. The data that has been obtained was selected and filtered before being analyzed by the researcher. Finally, the conclusions were drawn to present the results after the data that being analyzed. Findings from this study shows that MTs Negeri 3 Nganjuk students have very high reading comprehension ability based on the reading comprehension level which has 4 levels, namely literal, interpretive, critical, and creative. Students have a very high creative level based on test results that 100% of students have very high ability at this level. Furthermore, 87% at the literal level, 84% at the interpretive level which are considered as very high reading comprehension ability, and 76% at the critical level which are considered as high reading comprehension ability. The second research question is about factors influencing students’ reading comprehension ability. There are two categories of the factors; 4 internal factors and 4 external factors. The internal factors consist of ability, effort, strategy, and interest. Moreover, the external factors consist of task difficulty, teacher’s influence, family influence, and students’ environment. Based on the interview results, it was shows that 4 out of 4 internal factors and 3 out of 4 external factors influencing students’ reading comprehension ability.
