Abstract

Genre Based Approach (GBA) is language teaching and learning that aims to understand and produce texts of particular genres. The purpose of this research is to provide an overview of the implementation of the GBA in teaching reading comprehension and to present the difficulties faced by English teachers in implementing the GBA in teaching reading comprehension to students at SMKN 2 Kota Kediri. This research used a descriptive qualitative research design to obtain factual data regarding an event or phenomenon directly in the field. The research subjects of this research were two English teachers at Vocational School (SMKN) 2 Kota Kediri. One of the teachers is an English teacher in class X Computer Engineering, Networks and Telecommunications (TKJT) 2 at SMKN 2 Kota Kediri. The data was collected through observation and interview. The researcher observed the process of teaching reading comprehension using GBA in one meeting. The researcher conducted focused interviews with two English teachers to understand the difficulties faced by English teacher in implementing GBA in teaching reading comprehension to students at SMKN 2 Kota Kediri. The result of the study shows that the implementation of the GBA at SMKN 2 Kota Kediri had been running well in accordance with the GBA stages, namely Building Knowledge of the Field (BKoF), Modeling of the Text (MoT), Joint Construction of the Text (JCoT), and Independent Construction of the Text (ICoT). In implementing GBA, students showed an active attitudes and actively participated in learning. The difficulties faced by English teachers were that the English teachers need to develop reading texts that were suitable with students’ interests. Apart from that, students' lack of interest, lack of concentration, limited vocabulary knowledge and low literacy were also problems for English teachers. Time allocation is also one of the difficulties faced by English teachers. With long duration of study time, students become tired easily and lack concentration in studying. Recommendations for further researchers are expected to be able to carry out further exploration and develop research regarding the implementation of GBA. And it is hoped that can examine more depth what the difficulties faced by English teacher in implementing GBA in teaching students’ reading comprehension.
