(2) Ossa Bodhi Tala Sumanto, M.A. Keywords: Speaking Anxiety, Causes of Speaking Anxiety, Strategy to Overcome of Speaking Anxiety There are four skills that students must master when learning English: speaking, reading, listening, and writing. Speaking is one of them, and it is considered a productive skill. Speaking is that must be learnt in English skills by students. Yet many students feel anxious frequently especially in front of classroom. The purpose of this research was to investigate of causes the students’ speaking anxiety and the strategies to dealing of them. The approach of this research was qualitative descriptive research. The researcher chose the eighth-grade students of MTsN 1 Nganjuk as the research subjects, there were ten students of thirthy five students chosen as the subjects in interview session. Observation, interview, and document review were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result showed that the researcher found the conclusion of students’ speaking anxiety they were communication apprehension including nervous, shy, and not accustomed in presenting in front of class, fear of negative evaluation including afraid got bad score from the teacher and afraid if there were someone who spoke better than her, fear of making mistakes appeared because the students were not accustomed to speaking foreign languange, they admitted knowing about speaking English correctly, and low English proficiency there are low of vocabulary, low of pronounciation, low of grammatical structure in arranging sentence, meanwhile, the strategies to overcome of speaking anxiety were doing well preparation in study, and try to relax before delivering the words.
