Abstract

The ability to understand spoken language and interpret the message being communicated is known as listening comprehension, where individuals associate what they hear with existing knowledge. Then, listening habits can be understood from a cognitive perspective as a mental activity that involves processing language and non-language information through various cognitive systems such as attention, perception, and memory. This study looks at the relationship between listening habits and the widespread practice of using music or songs as an indirect language learning tool. Using song lyrics, Spotify helps listeners retain English songs and some words in their minds and creates the impression that learning the language is enjoyable. The aim of this study is to know the correlation between students’ habit on listening to English songs on Spotify and their listening comprehension skil. This study used a correlation quantitative research design. The population of this study was ten-grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri, and the sample was 30% of 396 students. They are 120 students whom the users of Spotify to listen to English songs. To analyze the correlation, researcher used Kendal’s tau b formula with SPSS. The istruments of this study are the questionnaire for habit on listening to English songs on Spotify and the test for listening comprehension skill. As stated on the findings of this research, the students’ habit on listening to English songs on Spotify has correlation to their listening comprehension skill. From Kendall’s tau-b analysis utilizing SPSS 25, the researcher found the significant value is 0.00, and the correlation coefficient is 0.507**. It means that there is a moderate and positive correlation between both variables. Although the correlation is medium, the level of significance is sufficient to reject the null hypothesis (Ho), which means (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, it can be said that when the students have habit on listening to English songs on Spotify, it will help them to have good listening comprehension.
