Abstract

The study of language in relation to social factors is very fascinating. In the speech community, people are always faced with code choices when they speak. That is why the phenomena of code-switching often occur in human life. Actually, the story of human life is presented in a movie. The movie critical eleven show the story of the millennial people. The millennial people are open-minded about the knowledge, technology and also the language. It’s mean that many millennial people use English in their life. The researcher chooses this movie because of the many phenomena of code-switching in the characters. By analysis this phenomenon, it explains that code-switching occurs anywhere. The purpose of this study is to find out the use of code-switching in the utterance of characters in critical eleven movies. This study investigated 3 types and reason of code-switching in the dialogues spoken by the characters using Hoffman theory, This study uses descriptive qualitative because the writer wants to describe the phenomena of code-switching including the types and the reasons of code switching used by the character in this movie. The data was collected through observation and documentation. The process of documentation is recording the movie from www.hooq.com, then transcribing, then observing by selecting switched phrases or sentences in the dialogues. The data are analyzed using Hoffman’s theory of types and reasons for code-switching. The result shows that most characters use intersentential switching in their conversation because the character in this movie is bilingual people, it because there are many characters are familiar to them so that can use in their sentence easily. And the most result also shows the reason for code-switching used by the characters in this movie is talking about a particular topic, it because the characters are comfortable to express their feeling.
