Abstract

Retelling technique has been known as one of teaching activities in language class. Retelling has the potential of fostering emotional intelligence and helps the child gain insight into human behavior. It also promotes language learning by enriching learners‟ vocabulary and acquiring new language structures. It is also a technique which can help language learners in improving his knowledge of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and pronunciation. This research is aimed for investigating the effectiveness of retelling technique in teaching listening. This is a quasi-experimental research. Two classes of the tenth grade of SMK PGRI 2 Kediri are used as experimental group and control group. They are OTKP 1 as the experimental group and OTKP 2 as control group. A set of test is used to measure students comprehension before and after treatment. Then to examine the data, the score of experimental and control group calculated by using procedure of ANCOVA. The finding reveals that the result of significant value is 0.008 is smaller than .05 (.008< .05) and the result of F-obtained is 7.661 which is higher than Ftable (7.661 > 4.01). Moreover, according to the analysis, it the retelling technique gives contribution to the students listening skill in the amount of 12.2 % (partial eta squared = .122). So, it can be concluded that there is a significant different between students who are taught by retelling technique with students who are not taught using retelling technique.
