Abstract

Online learning is one type of distance learning which takes place over the internet and used during the pandemic to support government program in social distancing. The aims of this study are: (1) to identify and describe perception of the students of State Islamic Senoir High Schools of Nganjuk on the use of online learning in learning English, (2) to identify the problems faced by students, (3) to know the way students solve their problem in the use of online learning in learning English. This study is survey research using a questionnaire and interview as an instrument to collect the data. This study involved 176 students of the state islamic senior high school of Nganjuk, consist of 3 schools there are MAN 1 Nganjuk, MAN 2 Nganjuk, and MAN 3 Nganjuk. The result of the study are as follows. (1) Online learning helped students to learn English during the pandemic and provided new experiences that can motivate students to learn. Good internet access helped students easily access material and assignments and also save their time and effort to submit it. Online learning also had negative responses such as difficulty to interact both with the teacher or their classmates. Missunderstanding and misinterpretation of the task when the instruction given were difficult to understand. The students responded that online learning spent cost a lot and it is not cost effective than classroom learning. The students feel difficult to access online learning when they are in the remotes area, because not all places have good access that can support online learning. (2) The problems faced by students includes: students have difficulty in understanding the material, difficulty in communicating with the teacher, online learning requires a lot of internet quota, bad internet network, and their smartphone specifications do not support online learning. (3) The students overcome the problems by asking their teacher or classmates who can understand the material and looking for the explanation form YouTube and educational platform to help them in understanding the material, students contact the teacher using a call via WhatsApp and ask other students about the problem being faced, students got internet quota from school and save their internet quota by not using it for activities that are not useful, besides of that, students’ looking for a place that provides Wi-Fi to access online learning, and students need to delete unnecessary applications so their smaprtphone storage can support in accessing online learning.
