Abstract

Reading is an important skill that has many benefits. However, since English is a foreign language, a lot of students at any level of education get difficulties in reading. To increase the reading skills of the students, the teachers should apply a media which is effective and interesting to teach. In previous teaching and learning activities, teachers only use printed textbooks as a learning source. Whereas using technology as a media in teaching reading can increase the students' interest and is more effective. One of the technologies that can be used for teaching reading is Google Classroom. It is effective and easy to use in teaching reading because it makes students easy to answer the questions and helps teachers save time, organize classes, and improve communication with students. The purpose of the study is to know whether the use of google classroom is effective to teach reading skill for the seventh grade students of junior high school. The method of this research was quasi-experimetal research conducted in two classes. The population of the research was the seventh-grade students of MTsN 4 Kediri. The sample of this research were VII-A as the experimental group and VII-B as the control group in teaching descriptive text. Class VII-A consisted of 26 students and class VII-B consisted of 25 students. The data was gathered by using test: pre-test and post-test. Then all the data were analyzed using quantitative approach which used some formula to find out descriptive analysis, normality test, homogeinity test, and hypothesis testing using ANCOVA. The researcher found that the mean score for control group was 49.12 (pretest) and 76.16 (post-test). The mean score for experimental group was 48.15 (pretest) and 81.69 (post-test). From the data analysis using ANCOVA, the result of significant value is (smaller) 0.001 than 0.05. It means that Hα was accepted while H0 was rejected. It can be concluded that using Google Classroom is effective in teaching reading for the seventh grade students of junior high school.
