Abstract

Speaking skills play a vital role in our daily lives. However, teaching speaking in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom presents significant challenges due to its limited use outside the classroom. Consequently, EFL teachers must possess not only a good level of proficiency but also a good understanding of effective teaching strategies for creating an engaging and productive learning environment to help students develop their speaking abilities. This research aims to describe the strategies used by teachers in teaching speaking at SMK PGRI 2 Kediri and the way the teachers implemented the strategies in teaching speaking. This research applied qualitative-descriptive method. The subject of this research involved two English teachers in the tenth grade at SMK PGRI 2 Kediri. The data was collected through observations and interviews which consist of 11 items. For the data analysis, it included data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions. The triangulation technique was used to ensure the validity of the data. The finding shows that the two English teachers applied different strategies in teaching speaking, and there are six strategies used by the teachers in total: discovery learning, project-based learning, and four types of cooperative learning those were picture and picture, small group discussion, role-playing, and three-step interview. The teachers adjusted the use of the strategies according to the students' needs,characteristics, major, and material they learned. In the implementation of the strategies, the teachers carried out certain steps for each strategy, used various media, and gave students a big opportunity to practice and develop their speaking skill in the classroom.
