Abstract

This study deals with classroom interaction through Flanders Interaction Analysis Category System. The objective of this study is to know the classroom verbal behavior that was happening in Grammar Subject of fourth semester at STAIN Kediri. The writer uses qualitative approach as method for analyzing the data. The data collection is done by observing. Then, the results are analyzed with the procedures proposed by Flanders Interaction (FIA). There are three verbal interactions that will be analyzed. They are teacher talk, pupil’s talk, and silence or confusion. Teacher talk includes seven categories. Those are accepts feeling, praises or encouragement, accepts or uses ideas of pupil, asking question, lecture, giving direction, and criticizing or justifying. And student talk includes pupil talk response and pupil talk initiation. The last concerned silence or confusion. Through matrix of FIA the result will be known. The results of the study show that: the proportion of first class are Silence or confusion (52,2%), teacher talk (41,2%), pupil’s talk (6,4%). Then in the second class, teacher talk (65,6%), Silence or confusion (21,8%), and pupil’s talk (12,5%) . Based on the research findings, it is concluded that both first and second class pupil’s talk is less. Mostly, teacher is still more dominant than student. However, between second and first class are different. In the second class, students are more active than first class. So, interaction is almost balance between teacher and student in the second class. Furthermore, it is suggested to give more reinforcement to student in order to gives positive effect and power, so student is brave to interact or share their own ideas.
