Abstract

The study is called experimental research. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the use of Cooperative Group Investigation (CGI) method in teaching reading comprehension is effective or not. The researcher used Cooperative Group Investigation (CGI) as a method in improving students’ reading comprehension. The population of this research is 40 students. The sample of this research is two classes which are divided into control group (VIII B, 20 students) and experimental group (VIII C, 20 students) by using simple random sampling technique. The Method or technique that is used in collecting data is a test. The data is computed and it is found that there are 30 valid items test. Then the valid items tests are used as the final test of reading comprehension test of experimental class and control class. And then the researcher calculated the test using the ANCOVA to know whether there was significant difference between the experimental class and control class The analysis shows that both groups have different mean score before and after treatment. From the calculation, in the pretest the mean score of experimental group was 63,75 and the mean scores of control group is 63,90. In posttest, the mean score of experimental group was 70,35 and the mean scores of control group is 66,60. It shows that experimental group has higher mean score than control group. So, it is conclude that using cooperative group investigation is effective in teaching reading comprehension. The result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significant was 0,002. It means that the students who were taught by using cooperative group investigation had significantly better reading skill than those who were not taught by using cooperative group investigation. It means that Cooperative Group Investigation method is effective in teaching reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of Mts Miftahul Huda in the academic year of 2013/2014.
