Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is the most important aspect to build basic knowledge. Moreover, there is a statement saying that one can mean something without grammar, but it is impossible without vocabulary. In terms many students have difficulty in understanding vocabulary on procedure text, especially at seven grade students of SMPN 2 Mojo Kediri. The objective of this study is to know whether the use of flashcards can improve the vocabulary mastery of students of SMPN 2 Mojo. The research design of this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consist of planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The cycle was conducted in 2x40 minutes (one meeting). The criteria of success of the classroom action research were At least 75% of students are actively included in the teaching and learning process and 75% the students got minimum score of 75. In order to obtain the data about the students’ vocabulary mastery improvement, the researcher used lesson plan, observation checklist, test, field note, and documentation. In the implementation of improving students’ vocabulary mastery by using flashcards the researcher stimulated students’ prior knowledge by asking question, introduction the topic, introduction about media, and the evaluation test. The implementation of the first cycle was not successful. This was because there were 17% students of the students passed the students get minimum score 75 and they did 57% of the activities designed for the first cycle. Therefore, the researcher continued to second cycle. In the second cycle the result of the students’ evaluation test showed that 84% student of the student passed the minimum score and they did 80% of activities designed for the second cycle. From the result, it can be concluded that the implementation is successful to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
