Abstract

This research was conducted at sixth semester of English department student in STAIN Kediri. The purpose of this research was to describe the reading habits of English department students and to know the factors influence the reading habit of English department students in STAIN Kediri. Based on the writer’s experience, most of students read course book because the lecturer gives assignment or test. As a student should already have good reading habit. But the reality is the most students do not have the habit of reading. They will look often to read when there is an assignment or test. Read in this case seems as frightened of failing or doing the coursework. Actually, if the students have good reading habit, it will help them to understand the material given by the lecturer. The research design used in this study is survey research. The subject of the study are 100 students from sixth semester students for the questionnaire and 20 students for interview. The 20 students taken from the questionnaire who has good reading habits and poor reading habits. It looks from the score of the questionnaire. In this research, first the researcher analysis the questionnaire. The researcher used criterion reference to know the level of the students’ reading habits and divide into three categories, that are good, poor and medium reading habits. The researcher uses range from three subject studies with the score maximum is 40 and score minimum is 8. Then, the researcher analysis the interview to know the factor influences the reading habits. The analysis of this study shows that mostly of the students have good reading habits in discourse analysis as many 34%. The students have medium reading habits in sociolinguistic as many 79%. Meanwhile, the students have poor reading habits in language testing as many 35%. The factors influence reading habits are physiological factors like tired and sleepy, intellectual factors like understand the content of book, environmental factors like background at home and socioeconomic. The most factor influence is psychological factors like motivation, interest and confident in class.
