Abstract

English as international language has already become one of the compulsory subjects of both senior and junior high school and also for elementary school in many countries including in Indonesia. It cannot denied that english is important to study. In fact, many problemsto understand the English, especially in teaching English. One of the learning methods that is predicted to solve the problem is cooperative learning-TGT (Team Games Tournament). The research problem in this study is how the implementation of using TGT method to improve students’ achievement at MTs.HasanMuchyi, and how can TGT method improvethe students’ achievement, especially in vocabulary. This research was CAR which starts from preliminary study continued by planning, implementation, observing, reflecting and the analysis of data. The subject of this study was the first graders of MTs.HasanMuchyi that consists of 29 students. The collected data was the students’ checklist, and students’ test. The data was analyzed based on the criteria on success. The criteria of success were at least of 75% students got score at least 70 and the average score were at least 70 could achieve the minimum of passing standard. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consist of four meetings. The first meeting is class presentation, second meeting is team work, third is game tournament and the last is test. In cycle I, based on the students’ test showed that 67,27% could achieve minimum of passing standard. It meant that TGT method was not success yet. But in cycle II, it became 84,24% could achieve minimum of passing standard. It showed that TGT method can be used to improve the students’ achievement. Based on the result of the study, the researcher concluded that there is improvement at students’ achievement in vocabulary at the first graders of MTs.HasanMuchyi. Here, the researcher suggested that the English teachers consider the method to be implemented in their class.
