Abstract
Writing is the last skill that taught to students to be able to product English as a text. The product of writing as a text is a significant result of students’ understanding of linguistic knowledge and what the text is purposed to. Recount text that is written by students which purposed to tell past event happened is constructed with language features of recount text by the students’ own style. Students’ linguistic knowledge is involved in writing recount text’s paragraphs with various kinds of sentence, clause and phrase that are organized with the use of textual and syntactical language features. Therefore, by the explanation of the reason, the writer purposed to conduct the study about language features analysis that objectively aimed to analyze and measure students’ recount writings’ composition of SMAN 2 Kota Kediri. A descriptive qualitative study is the design of the study which conducted with the involvement of participant from students of a first term of 10th grade. The product of recount writings as the object of the study were taken from 4 students’ recount writings of SMAN 2 Kota Kediri. By the Knapp and Watkins theory of genre and grammar, the analysis of students’ recount writings focused on the textual and syntactical language features analysis of recount text which combined with Chomsky’s tree diagram theory. The analysis of the textual and syntactical language features explained the students’ recount texts style with the measurement range by Heaton and Harmer to know how the students’ recount writings composition of language features used. The range of applying textual language features by students in their recount writings evaluated as effective application and simple construction of reference, connectives, tense and sentence structure as there were lacks of reference, tense, connectives in sentence structures in generic structure’s paragraphs. By the syntactical language features in each type of sentences of generic structure which portrayed in tree diagram evaluated as sufficient range of constructing clause pattern, agreement, verb form, prepositions, articles, plurals and punctuations as there were occasionally errors in constructing clause pattern, agreement, verb form, plurals and punctuation. By the results, this study intended to assist both for students in evaluating their writing and teachers to be more comprehend with every style of students’ writing in order to improve their writing.
