Abstract

Writing is one of the main skills in learning English. Writing is an activity in which the writers take their ideas and creativity someone to make some good paragraph.Finding and developing ideas in writing might be difficult for many students. The teacher must use creativity when teaching descriptive texts to pique students' interest in the content. Teachers can teach students using Instagram. The aims of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of Instagram as media in teaching writing descriptive text of tenth grade SMAN 1 Kandat.The design of this study was quantitative with quasi-experimental methods. The population in this study were SMAN 1 Kandat tenth grade students. The sample consisted of 69 students in total. This study's sample consists of two classes,there are class X_2 as the experimental group and class X_1 as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using Instagram and the control group was taught by using Power Point. To collect the data, pre-test and post test were applied to experimental group and control group. The test results were analyzed using ANCOVA in SPSS 22. The results of this study showed that there is significant difference between teaching writing descriptive text by using Instagram and teaching writing descriptive text by using Power Point. The experimental class's mean score in the pre-test was 70.56, while the control class's was 69.83. The mean post-test score for the experimental class was 81.63, while the control class scored 79.51.This was also supported by the ANCOVA calculation using the SPSS 22 program, which revealed that the class's significant value is.045, which is less than 0.05. It means that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted.Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of Instagram as media to teach writing ability on descriptive text is effective.
