Abstract

Speaking is an essential part of any English language teaching curriculum, thus being an important object of assessment. The common purposes of a speaking assessment are to measure language proficiency; to assess achievement of the objective of a course; to diagnose learners’ strengths and weaknesses; to identify what they do and do not know; and to assist in the placement of learners in a teaching program. The purpose of this research was to determine the level of speaking ability in the EFL Classroom at the second grade of SMAN 3 Kediri and the affective factors faced by the students at second grade of SMAN 3 Kediri. A qualitative descriptive approach was used in this research. The instruments used are oral test was adopted from Wallace (1998) to figure out the speaking ability. The questionnaire was adopted from Ur (2019) and Heriansyah (2012) and interview to figure out the affective factors faced by the students at the second grade of SMAN 3 Kediri. The data was analysed using theory from Oller in Mukminatien (2000) and Horwits and calculated manually to find out the level of students speaking ability and students problem in affective factors at the second grade of SMAN 3 Kediri. The result of this research showed that the students at the second grade of SMAN 3 Kediri were in the very good level, or 13 (38,23%) students. The good level, or 4 (11,77%) students. Enough level, or 7 (20,59%) students. Less level, or 3 (8,82%) students, and fail level, or 3 (8,82%) students. And the problem was in the indicator low or unevent and afraid of making errors, the percentage was 71,35%. The factor contributing students problem in affective factors were the students not used to speaking English in the classroom, not fluent in English yet, often use bahasa Indonesia when I’m speaking in class, don’t feel confident when I’masked to speak English, feel worry for getting critism when speaking Englis and don’t have motivation to express themselves.
