Abstract

Speaking is one of the skills that need to be mastered in order to be able to have good communication with others. Speaking is considered as a necessary skill, because it plays essential role in facilitating mastering English. In fact, the researcher found that the students still face some problems in speaking particularly non-linguistic. Based on this phenomenon, the researcher did further investigation to determine what are the non-linguistic problems and what are the cause of the problems in learning speaking English. The research used a descriptive quantitative method to answer the purpose of this research. The subjects of this research were the students of English department in academic year 2018/2019 of IAIN Kediri. The researcher obtained the data through questionnaire to know students’ perception of non-linguistic problems in learning speaking. To analyze the data, the researcher used Sugiyono’s theory. The result from the analysis as follows: (1) the most non-linguistic problems faced by students is inhibition such as feel discouraged, such as worried about making mistakes, afraid of losing face or criticism, or shy during speech. Furthermore, the rest are nothing to say and low participant. The mean of statement mostly above 60%, which is categorized in Agree interpretation. In other word, most of students has problem in mastering speaking skill. However, the mean of total of question is 64,5% which has interpretation Agree. (2) the causes of the nonlinguistic problems that the researcher found is psychological factors such as fear making mistakes, shyness, anxiety, unconfident to speak, low motivation and mother tongue use. The result of statements is above 60% which is the interpretation is agree
