Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and the most frequent politeness strategies used by teacher and students in English class. Politeness strategy is a crucial aspect of communication because it can avoid misunderstanding and minimize conflict between interlocutors. This will establish harmony between interlocutors such as the communication between the teacher and students in the class. This research was conducted in descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research was an English teacher and students of class 7 G SMPN 1 Mojo Kediri consisting of 40 students. The research instrument was observation through video recording and documentation. The data was analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. This research used expert triangulation to validate the data. The data was analyzed based on Leech’s politeness theory, namely: tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. The results showed that the teacher used all six maxims, namely tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. While the students only used four maxims, namely tact maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. Then, from the total 132 utterances of the teacher and students, it was found an agreement maxim was the most frequent politeness strategy used by the teacher and students with a total of 41 frequencies used by the teacher and 37 frequencies used by the students.
