Abstract

ABSTRACT Syahputra, I. B. 2021. “The Implementation of English E-Reader for Students’ Reading Comprehension during COVID-19 Pandemic Era”. Thesis, Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisors: (I) Bahruddin, S.S., M.Pd, (II) Ria Fakhrurriana, M.Pd. Keywords: English E-Reader, Reading Comprehension, COVID-19 Pandemic Era English E-Reader are fiction and non-fiction books specially written for learners of English as a foreign or second language. They are graded into levels of language difficulty (e.g. Stage 1-6, stage 1 being the lowest level) utilizing grammatical features, vocabulary, information load, and cultural background. It provides many e-readers or e-books that consist of simplified classic books or written form scratch ones using simple English. This research is aimed to know the implementation of using English E-Reader for reading comprehension in MAN 1 Kediri academic year of 2020/2021 during COVID-19 Pandemic. The research is conducted in MAN 1 Kediri. MAN is Islamic Senior High School that has the same level as Senior High School. The subject of this study is the students of X-MIPA 1 of MAN 1 Kediri. Basically, there are 30 students of XMIPA 1. However, there is a rule which the students of each class is divided into 2 groups. Each group gets 2 learning sessions in one week during COVID-19 Pandemic. This study involves 10 Students in X-MIPA 1. The researcher takes three students as the participants of the interview. The 10 students in X-MIPA 1 use English E-Reader as main learning media during the lesson. This descriptive qualitative research is done by observation, interview, and documentation in collecting the data The result of this research is described in the 5 meetings. From the beginning of the meeting until the last meeting, the students are able to understand about the introduction of the Narrative Text and English E-Reader to the students cover the definition, description, etc through the face-to-face classroom. Then, they comprehend the implementation of the teaching and learning process of the English E-Reader consists of pre-reading, while reading and post-reading through face-to-face classroom. The students are excited to explore the learning material through digging information from the text in the online classroom (Whatsapp). They present their discussion in group through the presentation in the online classroom (Whatsapp). Afterward, the researcher evaluates the students’ competencies on English E-Reader through evaluation session in the online classroom (Whatsapp). Based on the interview, the students can explain the role of the English E-Reader. They know about how to learn and access the English EReader website. Then, they recognize the challenges are often experienced when they learn English E-Reader.
