Abstract
ABSTRACT Nurdiana. 2020. The Effectiveness of Using Schoology on Students’ Achievement in Writing Descriptive Text of Second Grade Students at SMPN 8 Kediri. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Department of English Language. First Advisor: Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd. Second Advisor: Dr. Ary Setya Budhi Ningrum, M.Pd. Key Words: Effectiveness, Schoology, Writing, Descriptive Text. This study is to find out whether the use of schoology in teaching writing is descriptive text effective or not. The researcher used schoology in improving students’ writing skill. The aims of this experimental research are: to show if there is significant difference in the achievement and describe how well does schoology contribute to the students’ skills in writing descriptive text. This thesis is an experimental research. The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMPN 8 Kediri. The sample of this research is two classes which are divided into control group (VIII A, 28 students) and experimental group (VIII C, 28 students). This study employed a quasi experimental research. The instrument that is used in collecting data is a test. The result data is computed from student writing. And then the researcher calculated the test using ANCOVA to know whether there was significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. The analysis result shows that both groups have different mean score after treatment. From the calculation, in the pre-test the mean score of the experimental group was 78.86 and the mean score of the control group is 78.29. In post-test the mean score of the experimental group was 84.14 and the mean score of the control group is 80.86. It shows that the experimental group has higher mean score than the control group. So, it is concluded that using schoology is effective in teaching writing Descriptive text. The result of statistical computation by ANCOVA. From the output, it can be seen the result of significance from group is 0.018, it is lower than 0.05 (0.018 < 0.05). Since the significance value was smaller than 0.05 statistically there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. It means that, there is any significant difference in the achievement between the students who were taught descriptive text through schoology and the students who were taught descriptive text without schoology and schoology is effective in teaching writing descriptive text at the eighth grade students of SMPN 8 Kediri in academic year of 2019/2020.
