Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aimed to know whether the use of Question Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. The research design used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research is conducted in one cycle and consist of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Object of this research was the students of 9-J SMPN 1 Gampengrejo Kediri. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, test, and documentation. This research was conducted with approval of English teacher of SMPN 1 Gampengrejo Kediri. The findings of this study indicated that the Question Answer Relationship technique helped ninth-graders at SMPN 1 Gampengrejo Kediri in their comprehension of narrative texts. The data provided by the students' mean or average performance on the pre- and post-tests for cycle 1 indicate this. With a mean pre-test score of 56.52, the average post-test score for Cycle 1 was 79.44. There is evidence to indicate that Question Answer Relationship (QAR) may help students better comprehend what students read. The conclusion of this research is that the use of Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy was effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text.
