Abstract

Researcher conducted this research because the students need several strategies to help them improving their writing ability. Therefore, the researcher implemented the Draw Label Caption (DLC) strategy to solve their problem. This research aimed to find out the improvement of students’ writing ability in the descriptive text by using the DLC strategy in the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Mojo. The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) to conduct this research. This research was conducted in two-cycle each cycle consisted of three meetings. The research procedure consisted of four steps, they are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The instrument of the research was an observation sheet and writing test. The location of this research was taken at the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Mojo, with a number of subjects were 37 students. From the research findings and discussion, it was found that the DLC strategy can improve students' writing ability in descriptive text. It can be seen in each score on the writing test. In cycle 1, the students' scores showed that 19 students passed the test and 18 students failed. The mean score in cycle 1 was 67.77 and the percentage of students who succeeded was 51%. While the result of the observation sheet showed that the percentage of students’ activity was 70%. Data from cycle 1 showed that the student's score have not met the criteria of success, which is 75%. So this research needs to be continued in cycle 2 with several improvements to the learning scenario. In cycle 2, the students' scores showed that 30 students passed the test and 7 students failed. The mean score in cycle 2 was 79.93 and the percentage of students who succeeded was 81%. The observation sheet showed that the percentage of students’ activity was 83.33%. It means that students’ scores have met the criteria of success of the result. From these results, it can be said that the DLC strategy was significant in improving student's writing ability in descriptive text.
