Abstract
The speaking ability must be practiced on an ongoing basis because, in this skill, there are many elements in its application. If the students want to be good speakers, they should be a master of grammar. Sense that when someone has confidence it will make it easier for them to communicate with other people as well, and vice versa. The research aimed 1) To find out the significantly different impact of students’ having high confidence and high grammar with students’ having low confidence and high grammar on speaking skill. 2) To find out the significantly different impact of students’ having high confidence and low grammar with students’ having low confidence and low grammar on speaking skill. 3) To find out the significantly different impact of students’ having high confidence and high grammar with students’ having high confidence and low grammar on speaking skill. 4) To find out the significantly different impact of students’ having low confidence and high grammar with students’ having low confidence and low grammar on speaking skill. This research applied quantitative research that was classified as ex post facto design. There were three variables in this research, they were speaking skill as a dependent variable, confidence level and grammar mastery as an independent variable. The sample of this research was 43 students from the eighth grade of Islamic Boarding School Al-kautsar. There researcher used speaking test, questionnaire, and grammar test for this research. Then, the scores were calculated by using Friedman Test in IBM SPSS 25. In this research there were four results such as 1) there is significantly different impact of students’ having high confidence and high grammar with students’ having low confidence and high grammar on speaking skill, it was known by checking the significant value was .000 in which this value was lower than .05 and students’ having high confidence and high grammar (83.1) highest than students’ having low confidence and high grammar (80). 2) there is a significantly different impact of students’ having high confidence and low grammar with students’ having low confidence and low grammar on speaking skill, it was proved by checking the significant value was .000 which this value was lower than .05. and students’ having high confidence and low grammar (81.5) highest than students’ having low confidence and low grammar (79). 3) there is significantly different impact of students’ having high confidence and high grammar with students’ having high confidence and low grammar on speaking skill, it was proved by checking the significant value was .000 in which this value was lower than .05 and students’ having high confidence and high grammar (83.1) highest than students’ having high confidence and low grammar (81.5). 4) there is significantly different impact of students’ having low confidence and high grammar with students’ having low confidence and low grammar on speaking skill, it was known by checking the significant value was .000 in which this value was lower than .05 and students’ having low confidence and high grammar (80) highest than students’ having low confidence and low grammar (79). The data also shows that students’ having high confidence and low grammar (the average of students’ speaking 81.5) had the highest score than students’ having low confidence and high grammar (an average of students speaking 80). This data means that confidence is the main element in speaking to be improved and developed for students. Still, grammar is an element that is no less important because speaking also requires excellent and correct sentence structure according to applicable rules.
