Turn Taking need a strategy in order to constitute one speaker speaks at a time and achieve a smooth conversation. In a talkshow, there are random topic shifts that make them unsystematic. Thus, the turn-taking strategy will make it easier to build the chemistry between the hosts and the guest by making the talk show run smoothly. One of the most popular and the longest late-night talk show in America is Jimmy Kimmel Live. This study is aimed to find out what are the types of turn taking strategy and the most strategy used by Barack Obama and The Host in Jimmy Kimmel Live Talkshow on November 20th 2020. This research used a descriptive qualitative method to describe, explain, and analyse the type of turn taking strategy based on theory of Stenstrom (1994). The instrument of this research was the researcher herself. The data of this research was the utterances of Barack Obama and Jimmy Kimmel. Furthermore, the method used to collect the data was documentation by downloading the video from YouTube with 25.33 minutes. After that, all utterances containing turn taking strategies are identified and classified according to the type of turn taking strategy on Stenstrom’s theory. The result shows that the participant used all types of turn taking strategies which are proposed by Stenstrom (1994) namely taking the turn, holding the turn and yielding the turn. The researcher found eleven subcategories of turn taking strategies used by the participants, including Hesitant Start (9.2%), Uptakes (9.2%), Links (5%), Alert (0.5%), Filled Pause (18.4%), Silent Pause (23.4%), Repetition (15%), new start (3.2%), Prompting (13.6%), Appealing (0.5%), and Giving up (2%). Nevertheless, the researcher did not found two subcategories of turn taking strategies namely clean start strategy and Meta-comment strategy in Taking the turn strategy. The researcher also found the dominant turn taking strategy used by the participant throughout the conversation is silent pause.
