Abstract
Reading is a vital language skill not only in English, but also at all educational levels. In teaching reading, there are several things that must be done to improve students’ reading comprehension. The teacher must be able to be a facilitator for students in learning activities in a classroom. Many students are easy to get bored in facing English, especially toward reading. The story mapping is expected to be able to help students on their reading comprehension. The aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of using story mapping on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text for the first grade students at SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih. The design of this research was quasi-experimental. The population was the students of class X in SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih. The samples were two classes; experimental and control groups. The experimental group was class X IPS.2 consisting 33 students and the control group was class X IPS.5 consisting of 33 students. The experimental group applied story mapping as their learning technique and the control group applied brainstorming. There are two kinds of test which are administered to the students in both groups namely pre-test and post-test. The purpose is to investigate the students’ reading comprehension before and after treatment. This research used Mann Whitney U test because the result of Shapiro-Wilk analysis on the pre-test and post-test were not normal, then the hypothesis test must use nonparametric test. The homogeneity variance of pre-test is 0,088 ( > 0,05) and post-test is 0,150 ( > 0,05). The Mann Whitney U test showed that the significant value is 0,000. It is lower than the significant level (0,000 < 0,05). In other word, there is a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension between the students taught by story mapping and the students taught by brainstorming. It means that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Based on the findings above, the researcher concludes that story mapping is an effective technique in teaching reading comprehension for the first grade students at SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih.
