ABSTRACT Mubarok, Husni. 2022. The Effectiveness of Using English Cartoon Movies on Student’s Vocabulary Mastery at Sman 1 Pare. English Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Kediri. Advisor: (I) Erna Nurkholida, M.Pd. (II) Dewi Nur Suci, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Teaching vocabulary, Cartoon Movie Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects for foreign language learner to acquire since it is critical in conveying the meaning of a message. Without a sufficient vocabulary, one cannot communicate effectively or express his or her ideas in both oral and written form. The objective of the study is to investigate whether the use of cartoon movieis more effective than story text in teaching vocabulary to the eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Pare. To achieve the purpose of this study, the design used is the quasi experimental research. The subject of this research is the students at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Pare in the second semester in the academic year of 2021/2022 that consists 70 students. The subjects are divided into two classes, IPS 1 class as experimental group and IPS 2 class as control group. Class IPS 1 is taught by using cartoon movie and class IPS 2 is taught by using story text. To collect the data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test at experimental and control group. The result of the tests was analyzed by using ANCOVA through SPSS 26.0. Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significant value was (p) .005 < 0.05 level. Since the significant value was smaller than 0.05 statistically, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. It means that the students who were taught by using cartoon movie got significantly better vocabulary mastery than the students who were taught by using story text. Therefore, the hypothesis “the students who are taught by using cartoon movie get better vocabulary mastery than the students who are taught by using story text” is accepted. It can be concluded that using cartoon movie is effective in teaching vocabulary mastery.
