Abstract

Key Words: Writing, Descriptive Text, Discovery Learning Model English is one of the subjects studied by students at every level of education. Writing is considered to be the last English skill that is difficult for second language learners to master. The researcher found that most of the students still find it difficult to make good writing because writing requires creative thinking. So the researchers implemented the discovery learning model to overcome students' problems. This study aims to determine the improvement of students' ability in writing descriptive text by using a discovery learning model. The subjects of this study were students of class VII B MTs Nurul Islam Kediri City which consist of 29 students. The discovery learning model consists of six steps in the form of stimulation, problem statements, data collection, data processing, verification, and generalization. This discovery learning is combined with magic cards, namely learning media from a rectangular sheet of paper containing images with a unique appearance. Thus, magic cards can help to create a sense of fun. This research uses classroom action research. Data was obtained through qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative data were obtained through interviews, observation sheets, and documentation. Meanwhile, quantitative data were obtained from descriptive text writing tests conducted by students three times, namely pre-cycle test, cycle 1 test, and cycle 2 test. The research results and findings indicate that the use of discovery learning models can improve student achievement in writing descriptive texts. This can be seen from the students' writing test results which increased in each cycle. This research was conducted in two cycles. This test is said to be successful if students get a score of 75 and the average value of students is 75 and the percentage of students who pass is 75%. The results of the pre-cycle test, the first cycle test, and the 2nd cycle test. The average value of the pre-cycle test was 65.29 and for the first cycle test, it was 74.15, while the second cycle test was 82.96. Thus, teaching writing using the discovery learning model can improve the skills of writing descriptive texts effectively.
