Abstract
Key Words: Reading skill, Teaching Reading, Teaching Media, Picture Series. Reading, one of the four basic skills, is regarded as very important because reading can lead people to get so much information. In reading skills, students face some obstacles such as their lack of vocabulary mastery, their low motivation in participating and being active in the class activity, and the media used by the teacher is monotonous. These factors make the reading learning process can not achieve its goal. Therefore, the researcher applied picture series as teaching media to overcome the problems.The purpose of this study was to determine whether picture series can be an effective medium to improve reading skills. The author conducted research in class VII at SMP Darul Fikri Ngoro Jombang in the 2022 academic year. This study used qualitative approach with classroom action research design. The writer designed the lesson plan, observed the students’score by pre cycle test, cycle 1 test and cycle 2 test.The data collected is mostly qualitative although there is some quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process during the implementation of the action, interviewing students, and holding discussions with the English teacher. Meanwhile, quantitative data was obtained by assessing students' reading comprehension through a reading test. The results showed that the use of picture series had succeeded in making students able to understand English texts. This can be seen from the results of pre cycle,cycle 1 test and cycle 2 test. The average score of the pre cycle is 63.68 and for cycle test 1 is 89.78, while cycle 2 test is 94.63. In other words, there is a significant effect of having picture series in teaching narrative text students' reading comprehension. This means that the use of picture series in teaching students' reading comprehension of narrative texts is effective to be applied in class VIII students at Darul Fikri Ngoro Junior High School, Jombang.
