Abstract

Writing is one of the productive skills that must be mastered by the student while learning English. Learning English is difficult for some students. So, the teacher should make an enjoyable and interesting in the learning process. Using appropriate strategy is one of the ways to solve the problem. Afterwards, the researcher tried to use outlining strategy in teaching writing. This strategy that makes an outline that contains an outline part of an essay so that the organized ideas become directed and systematic. The objective of this research is to know the effectiveness of using outlining strategy in teaching writing descriptive text. This research used quasi-experimental study. It involved 55 students of seventh grade of MTsN 8 Kediri in the second semester of academic 2021/2022. The students were divided into two classes: VII-B as the experimental class and VII-C as the control class. In the research, the students of VII-B were taught by using outlining strategy, whereas the students of VII-C were taught by using mind mapping strategy. The researcher used pre-test and post-test to collect data. The data were analyzed by using ANCOVA in SPSS 25. The result of this study can be seen from the means of both pre-test and post-test experimental and control class. The mean score of pre-tests experimental was 48.57 and control class was 48.22. Meanwhile, the result of post-test experimental class was 82.75 and control class was 81.37. It can be concluded that the experimental class got the higher mean’s score than control class. In addition, the result of ANCOVA showed that (p) was 0.009 (p < α 0.05). It can be concluded that using outlining strategy is effective in teaching writing descriptive text for junior high school especially seventh-grade at MTsN 8 Kediri.
