Abstract
For most EFL college students writing skills have been the main issue in Indonesia. This study is concerned with factors affecting essay writing of EFL students in The English Department of IAIN Kediri. This study aims to discover the internal and external factors affecting essay writing in the English Department of IAIN Kediri. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method descriptive research design. The researcher chose these 34 students in the 3rd semester in the English Department of IAIN Kediri.As the instruments, the researcher used a close-ended questionnaire and interview guide. To discover which aspects are more prime factors affecting essay writing of EFL students, the researcher calculated each statement. Then the result was divided into internal and external factors affecting the essay writing of EFL students.The research results showed factors affecting essay writing of EFL students in the English Department of IAIN Kediri. First, the internal factors affecting essay writing were psychological factors revealed EFL students in the English Department of IAIN Kediri struggle in finding the topic/title for their essay. While sociocultural factors showed difficulty following the instructions from the lecturer. Linguistic factors revealed difficulty minimizing grammar errors and using suitable tenses for the essay. However, the external factors affecting essay writing were non-social factors and social factors proved EFL students in the English Department of IAIN Kediri rely on technology to finish their assignments, as well as peer support, motivating them to write their essays.
