Abstract

Ningrum, A. S. 2022. “The Effectiveness Of Using Group Investigation (GI) Method in\ Teaching Writing Descriptive Text”. Thesis. Department of English Languange Education. Faculty of Tarbiyah. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisors: (I) Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd., M.H (II) Dr.Toyyibah, S.S., M.Pd Keywords: Writing, Group Investigation, Descriptive Text Writing is defined as a way for people to express their thoughts in writing form. Writing requires creativity to produce good writing. Besides, students must be able to understand aspects of writing, namely content, organization, tenses, vocabulary, grammar and others. Several problems arise in the process of teaching and learning to write such as students lack understanding in basic science, lack of confidence, and also the teacher does not use interesting techniques in teaching writing. For this reason, there are many techniques that can be used to facilitate the teaching and learning process of writing. In this study, the researcher used Group Investigation to teach writing. Group investigation is a method in cooperative learning that helps students to be more confident, and play an active role in learning and sharing ideas in groups. The purpose of this study was to determine whether Group Investigation was effective or not in teaching writing skills. This study used quasi-experimental. The subjects of this study were students of MTs Arrahmah with two samples of 60 students consisting of 2 classes, namely class 7C as an experimental class using the Group investigation method and class 7A as a control class using inquiry learning. This study is designed in a quantitative case study. Data was collected using pre-test, experiment, and post-test. Before the research started, the researchers conducted interviews with English teachers who teach at MTs Arrahmah. Validation of instrument from this research using inter-rater value between the English teacher at MTs Arrahmah and the researcher. The results were analyzed using Ancova with the SPSS program. The result of this study was calculated by using Ancova, (F=5.918; 0.018<0.05). The percentage description of the experimental class is 83% and the control class is 60%. The researcher concludes that the null hypothesis is accepted, and the alternative hypothesis is rejected. Therefore, the research hypothesis which states, "There is no significant difference between students taught by the Group investigation method and students taught by inquiry learning on writing skills", is accepted. The researcher concluded that there was no significant difference between students who were taught using the Group investigation method and students who were taught using inquiry learning. However, both techniques were effective in improving students' writing comprehension because each group achieved a higher score after being treated with the technique.
