Abstract

Social media can be one of the alternative media that helps students in mastering speaking skill. Social media provides features that have many benefits for students nowadays. It also gives information knowledge, news and others to people around the world only on their gadget. The material of speaking skill can be easily found on social media. This research aims to explore the use of social media for learning speaking. Descriptive qualitative is used as the research method to explain the analyzed data. The subject is the eleventh grade students and the setting is in SMAN 3 Kediri located on Mauni Street, No. 88 Bangsal, Pesantren, Kediri City. The techniques of collecting data used observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The processes of analyzing data were reducing data, organizing data, and drawing the conclusion. The data result proved that all participants use social media as a media to learn speaking as the source of knowledge and the example of practicing it. From 80 participants, 59% agreed and 24% strongly agreed that social media can increase their speaking fluency. Most of them in the process, students use social media to get the materials then they practice it by themselves or with their friends. In the interview found that the majority of students use social media WhatsApp, Instagram, and Youtube to learn speaking skill and the material to practice it. There are the challenges in learning speaking using social media. Most of them is understanding the difficult material without teachers’ explanation. There are motivations in using social media for learning speaking from internal and external factor. The internal motivation is students' awareness of the importance of mastering speaking English to support their study, getting job and to face the globalization in the future. The external motivation is that using social media has many advantages in learning English especially speaking skill because there are so many materials can be easily found with fun and exciting learning process. In additional, the use of social media for learning speaking by students can be with various ways and it also has the challenges and motivation for each students.
