Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the parents perceive about the constraints of guiding their kids in learning English at home during the COVID19 pandemic and to know the way parents cope with the constraint of parents in guiding their kids in learning English at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a quantitative research method with a survey design. The data was collected by a questionnaire. This study involved 100 parent students of secondary school in Kediri city. The result of the analysis showed that parents give a negative response regarding to the constraint of guiding their kid learning English at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. From 100% (100) respondents, 60% (60) respondents had difficulties in understanding English material, 65% (65) respondents had constraint in explaining English material, 39% (39) respondents had difficulties to controlling emotion, 40% (40) respondent had difficulties to develop an interest in learning English, 23% (23) respondent had difficulties operating gadgets, 23% (23) respondents had an internet connection problem, 2% (2) respondents had constraint with time availability, 2% (2) respondents had constraint in disciplining study time, 2% (2) respondents had constraint that their kid is hard to understand material and one of respondents had constraint that their kid is difficulties to memorizing vocabulary. The parents' way to cope with their constraints is to find a private tutor, 25% (25) respondents used the way. Then, 33% (33) respondents asked to the expert or teacher, 35% (35) respondents try to learn more to understand English material from different sources, 7% (7) respondents suggested that their child study with friends, 6% respondents give materials patiently, 12% (12) respondents give advice to developing an interest in learning English, 3% (3) respondents give a good facilities and 2% (2) respondents discipline study time. It turns out that many of the constraints parents’ have faced while guiding their kid learning English at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, they tried to find ways to cope with the constraints.
