Abstract

Writing is one of the basic skills of English that students must master. Students often find some difficulties in mastering writing skills. In teaching recount text teacher must be creative to make students interested in material to be taught. Teacher can use Instagram as their way to teach students. The aims of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of Instagram in teaching writing recount text to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kediri. The design of this research was quasi-experimental. The population was students of class X in SMA Negeri 2 Kediri. The samples were two classes devided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was class X-MIPA 7 consisting of 30 students, and the control group was class X-MIPA 6 consisting of 30 students. The researcher used test as the instrument of the research. The format of the test is writing test. In analyzing data, the researcher used Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) by SPSS Program 21.0 version. The result of assumption by ANCOVA indications that: (1) The data is normally distributed, (2) the variance between experimental and control group is homogeneous; (3) there is no interaction between pre-test and post-test group; and (4) the relationship between pre-test and post-test is linear. The end of the assumption of ANCOVA showed that the significant value is 0.000 smaller than 0.05 (0.000< 0.05) it means that there is enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis (H0) and accept the alternative hypothesis (Ha). From the result of the research, there have been a different mean between students from the experimental group who were taught by using Instagram and also students from the control group who were taught using PowerPoint. Based on the explanation, it can be concluded that Instagram is effective in teaching writing for the tenthgrade senior high school students.
