Abstract

In education, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) gets a positive response in the teaching and learning process. Writing can help students in delivering some messages. It is integrated with other skills. Thus, WhatsApp can be used by students in improving their writing skills because WhatsApp is a smartphone application for instant messaging. Based on the previous studies, many students still face many problems in writing. Most students state that learning using conventional methods or in class was boring enough so that they felt stressed. Therefore, WhatsApp can be an interesting and fun writing learning application for students. This study aims to investigate students' perceptions toward the use of WhatsApp in writing class. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative. This study involved 76 participants from 2nd semester students in Sentence and Paragraph Writing class at English Department of IAIN Kediri in the academic year of 2020/2021. Moreover, the data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire consisted of 20 close-ended questions distributed to 76 students and the interview consisted of 5 questions distributed to 6 students. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed based on the frequency of students’ answers and then interpreted into percentages from each aspect. Meanwhile, the data from interview were explained from each statement from students’ responses. The data were grouped into three aspects (Sari & Putri, 2019); students’ perception toward the use of WhatsApp in writing class in the technical aspect, educational aspect, and instructional aspect. The categories were grouped to make the data interpreted more easily. The findings showed that the average score for the three aspects of the questionnaire was 72.3%. Based on the results of these scores, it can be concluded that students' perceptions of three aspects are at a high level of interest. The results of the questionnaire also revealed that students have positive respond toward the use of WhatsApp in the writing class. WhatsApp can help students communicate with lecturers, get direct response from lecturers, and the material shared via WhatsApp will spread more quickly. The findings from interviews with six students showed that students can study outside the classroom as well as students can use their gadgets in a positive way to improve their ability to learn English. On the other hand, some students revealed that there were some problems such as poor internet connection, typos, and some students chose to become silent readers. However, the use of WhatsApp in the writing class can have a positive impact on students' writing skills.
