Abstract
Writing is a very complex task. The students need to have ability in understanding about how to organize the essay, how to use the correct grammar and sentence structure, how the content of the essay is, how to use the appropriate mechanics and how to use the vocabulary of the writing. Based on the interview with the English teacher, the students” ability in writing was lacking because they still made many errors in their writing mostly in using the correct grammar and sentence structure. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the students” ability in writing cause and effect essay, the problems they faced in writing cause and effect essay, and how they solve their problem in writing cause and effect essay. This research used descriptive gualitative as the method to describe and interpret the data. The data were obtained by analyzing the students” essay writing based on Jacobs et al. (1981) writing assessment rubric instrument, calculating guestionnaire from 32 respondents, and transcribing interview from the English teacher. The subject of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Kediri in academic year 2020/2021 who have gotten material about cause and effect essay. The students were assumed to be able to write cause and effect essay properly. The result showed that the students” ability in writing cause and effect essay classified as “Good” based on the means score of the students” cause and effect essay. The mean score was 79.38. There were 8 students (2564) in fairly good grade, 20 students (62.596) in good grade and 4 students (12.5Y5) were in very good grade. Besides that, language use was the problem that the students faced the most in writing cause effect essay. There were 12 students (37.5”6) had problem in language use, 7 students (21.8896) had problem in mechanics, there were 6 students (18.75y6) had problem in content, 5 students (15.63) had problem in organization and 2 students (6.25Y9) had problem in vocabulary. Also, there were three kinds of solutions offered by the students such as using internet to access various sources (62.5Y4), using dictionary (28.13”69), practice writing more (9.384). In line with the students” result, the English teacher suggested them to practice writing more outside the class.
